The field of autism intervention has grown substantially over the past three decades. Clinicians and academics now have access to a rich body of research — meta-analyses, randomised controlled trials, and longitudinal outcome studies — that informs best practice across disciplines. This guide synthesises key findings across the most commonly deployed interventions.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
ABA remains one of the most rigorously studied interventions for ASD. Comprehensive early intensive behavioural intervention (EIBI) programs (25–40 hours per week, beginning before age 5) show the strongest evidence base for improvements in IQ, adaptive behaviour, and language outcomes. Recent research has focused on naturalistic developmental behavioural interventions (NDBIs) such as ESDM and JASPER, which embed ABA principles in play-based, relationship-centred frameworks with comparable efficacy to clinic-based ABA.
Speech-Language Therapy
The evidence base for SLT in ASD is robust, particularly for expressive vocabulary, functional communication, and pragmatic language. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) — including SGDs, PECS, and robust low-tech systems — has strong support across verbal and non-verbal populations. Core vocabulary approaches and communication temptations are increasingly well-evidenced in pre-school cohorts.
Occupational Therapy and Sensory Integration
Sensory integration therapy (Ayres Sensory Integration, ASI) now has conditional evidence support per AOTA, with ongoing research focusing on fidelity of implementation. OT intervention for fine motor, self-care, and school participation demonstrates consistent effect sizes in single-case and group designs.
